Description
Frankincense Characteristics and Symbolism
Frankincense, also called frankincense, comes from the resin of the Boswellia serrata tree, a member of the Burseraceae family. The tree grows to a height of 2 to 8 meters and has thick, rough bark, often grayish or brownish in color. The most striking characteristic of this tree is its resin. When the bark is cut, a milky-white sap is released that hardens into yellow or amber droplets. These resinous droplets are harvested for frankincense.
The tree is native to the Arabian Peninsula, particularly Somalia and Oman. However, it also grows well In the dry, rocky regions of Northeast Africa, its use dates back centuries. In Egypt, for example, it was often used in temples and rituals, where it was associated with the gods and used in embalming. It's therefore not surprising that this aroma symbolizes purification, spirituality, and meditation. The Greeks and Romans valued Boswellia carterii resin for its fragrance and medicinal properties. It was used in perfumes, incense, and as a remedy for various ailments. For this last purpose, this essential oil was also employed in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine.
