Description
Frankincense Characteristics and Symbolism
Frankincense, also known as incense, comes from the resin of the Boswellia Serrata tree, which belongs to the Burseraceae family. The tree is between 2 and 8 meters high and has a thick and rough bark, often gray or brownish in color. The most striking feature of this tree is its resin. When the bark is cut, a milky white sap is released that hardens into yellow or amber colored drops. These resinous drops are harvested for incense.
The tree is native to the Arabian Peninsula, particularly Somalia and Oman. However, the tree also likes to grow in the dry, rocky regions of Northeast Africa. Its use is centuries old. In Egypt, for example, it was often used in temples and during rituals. There, it was associated with the gods and used in embalming. It is therefore not surprising that this aroma symbolizes purification, spirituality and meditation. The Greeks and Romans valued the resin of Boswellia carterii for its scent and medicinal properties. It was used in perfumes, incense and as a remedy for various ailments. For this last purpose, this essential oil was also used in traditional Indian as well as Chinese medicine.
